Expletive negation from avertive marker to fear complementizerThis talk investigates the emergence of expletive negation with attitude reports in the history of French from its Latin origins. By so doing, it addresses the question of how do langages grammaticalize avertive conjunctions (i.e., lest-clauses) into fear complementizers ? Set against the background of the decompositional analysis of attitude reports (Kratzer 2006), this study presents a novel scenario for the development of expletive negation in a langage’s grammar. Additionally, this talk addresses the question of expletive negation in before-clauses as a testbed for diverse explanations of this linguistic phenomenon from different contextual frameworks.
