Titre : The syntax of answers & information structure in Javanese

This paper investigates the structure of answers in Javanese where we find an unexpected order of tense-aspect-modal markers which otherwise obey a strict relative ordering. My analysis of this unexpected order provides insight into information structure in Javanese. I show that not only does Javanese provide cross-linguistic evidence supporting focus movement in answers following Holmberg (2015), but this syntactic configuration allows us to test for the interpretation of the grammatical subject, which has been argued to only be associated with a topic interpretation. I show that grammatical subjects can be non-topics in Javanese, contra previous analyses, and bringing new diagnostics to this long-standing debate across Austronesian languages.
