The role of mathematical context and age for the interpretation of “or”
Résumé:
Logical operators form an essential basis in mathematics. However, the linguistic expression of these can lead to different interpretations. For a study with 33 participants aged 7 to 12 years and adults, text tasks with extra- and intra-mathematical contexts were developed that required an interpretation of the operator “or”. This presentation will discuss these "or" items and the differences in their interpretation (as inclusive OR and exclusive XOR) depending on the age groups of the participants and the mathematical context.
