Title: Are L1 and L2 acquisition guided by common underlying mechanisms?  Evidence from disjunction and negation.

Abstract:
Whether the mechanisms supporting first and second language acquisition are shared or distinct has long been a matter of debate. In this talk, I will present a series of experiments on how adult L2 speakers interpret disjunction under negation and how they acquire the negation system of their target language. I will show that adults learning a second language interpret logical expressions and negation in ways that mirror patterns observed in children’s early language development, rather than simply following preferences from their native language. These results challenge traditional views of second language acquisition and provide new insights into the core cognitive mechanisms supporting language learning across diverse populations and contexts.
