Title: Present Day English and Collective Readings

Abstract:
The talk investigates uses of Present Day English “every” in which it occurs with collective predicates, for example “Everyone gathered around the monitor.” Two empirical studies (a corpus study and a questionnaire study with age stratification of the participants)  provide evidence that this type of occurrence is an innovation. The examples are analysed semantically, and a theory of the semantic change involved is presented.
